This new and revised edition of CIRCUITS IN THE BRAIN offers a survey of brain function with an emphasis on explanation. It starts with the assertion that the mathematical approach, while central to texts in physics or chemistry, is almost completely useless when it comes to explaining how the brain works. Instead, this book attempts to pick a small but useful collection of facts from anatomy and physiology, and describe their contribution to the brain’s peculiar strategy of data processing. For instance it is noted that that the brain translates items of the outside world into surprising events impinging on the neurons, and that the impact of these events is what causes the neurons to undergo lasting change.
