The Starrett 2740-1 Wisdom Basic Electronic Indicator has six user-selectable resolutions with a maximum resolution of 0.0001” (0.002-mm), accuracy of + or - 2 resolutions, and a total measurement range of 0” - 2” (0 - 50 mm). The digital display has a sealed housing with a glass scale design, a maximum read hold, and can be set to zero at any spindle position for measuring in either or both directions (plus or minus). The 5-3/4” (146-mm) rectangular housing has a rotating bezel, a rear mounting bracket with a 1/4” (6-mm) diameter hole, and an output jack that allows for data transmission to PC compatible RS-232C (serial port) supported devices. Manufactured to American Gage Design (AGD) standards, the indicator can be powered from any of three sources: 110V AC adaptor, rechargeable zinc-air batteries, or through the data port. An auto-off feature turns the indicator off after 10 minutes of nonuse. Dial indicators may also be called dial gauges, dial calipers, and probe indicators. These precision measuring tools are used to accurately measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can more easily be read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
